• "New York City was the Mecca of boxing, home of all the greatest trainers and so many legendary fighters. We've been blessed and people who really know the fight game know we're still the capital of boxing. If Foreman wants to be a legend, he needs this fight. He has to go face-to-face with Cotto and trade punches, but I think he'll stumble. Cotto is carrying the Puerto Ricans on his shoulders and I always say, 'Go with the knockout punch.' It's what we all want to see." -- Wilson Ramirez, owner/trainer, Zaragoza Boxing Gym, in Brooklyn New York.

Philly stable flashes dominance; goes 3-0 at Blue Horizon

[10/16/2009, Philadelphia]  It was a chilly Friday night, but you couldn’t tell from inside the Blue Horizon on Broad Street.  There was smoldering heat coming from an Ecuadorian boxer standing in the red corner, while he glared as his opponent approaching the ring.  The audience came to life, because many of them knew that these two particular boxers had almost brawled at the weigh-in the day before.

The stare-down added some drama to a stacked fight card for the 10th Anniversary Power Productions show, which was to be headlined by the USBA championship bout between Derek “Pooh” Ennis and Eromosele Albert.

Back in the Blue on Broad, the crowd was hollering because the referee could barely keep the two men away from each other before the bell rang.  As soon as the ref got out of the way, The Ecuadorian drove his opponent into the ropes and threw a barrage of power punches to the head and body, and would continue to do so for four straight rounds.

The Ecuadorian was Mario Mina, and he battled the larger Tommie “Big Poppa” Speller to a unanimous decison.  This was the second victory of the night for the Battlestrong Boxing stable; the first went to the young gunner of the group,Killer Coy Evans.

To write my story my story you need a large book.  My name is Wilson Ramirez Benavides, and I own my knowledge from Chango Diaz from Cuba.  He came from the school of Cuba was a  good friend of Sarria who was a great massagist of Ali.  I think and I assure you that Chango was one of the best conditioner trainers that I met.  Its very different being a trainer, massagist, and a boxing teacher.  I'am grateful that Sugar thought me what he called the principle letters of the sweet science. Every individual has their own aspect marked.  Vinston (Sugar)  Martin has told me that his  teacher  mentor,  The venerable Aubrey "The Silver Fox",  Woodruff, was from Jamaica and resided for many years in Sugar's hometown  Panama, and that great boxers, like of Joe Louis, "Jolting" Joe Brown, Davey Moore (RIP), Carlos Ortiz, as well as eminent boxing trainer like Ray Arcel, Almicar Brusa, Lee Black, Freddy Brown and notable managers as  Abe Green, Bill Daley, ect., had good if not great regard for his teacher- mento Aubrey " The silver Fox" Woodruff.   Vinston (Sugar) Martin, in turn, has trained such notables and great as Eusebio  Pedroza,  ex -world feather champion.   In 8  years in the famous tournament of  New york  Golden Gloves had a record of 49 wins and 8 losses,  and 4 boxers reached the finals at Madison Square Garden, no one has knocked them  out.   I have the privilege to work in the corner of Frankie Randall vs Jose Rivera, Fernando Trejo vs Roger matwga, Guadalupe Bronco Rosales in his first 5  fight,  Mario Mina in his first 5 fight,  Elias Tiro Castillo has 6 fights never won one but they never knock him out.In 1995 I have the privilege to be in the first tournament of the Golden gloves for women in New York City  in the second fight  was vs Patricia Alcivar probably  one of the best boxers in that tournament.  I'am grateful for the people who opened their  door to  me and for those who close it.  I knew that god will protect me of the wrong path.

Zaragoza   Gym is One of the oldest boxing gym in New York City  who open their doors in  1940 to this day is still a boxing gym.
